Orthokeratology (ortho-K) is a non-surgical technique which uses a mould to reshape the cornea while you sleep. This allows you to wake up and see clearly without the need for any visual aid. Unlike laser surgery, the therapy is non-invasive and completely reversible once you stop the treatment.
Ortho-K allows active individuals the ability to go about their daily activities for work, recreation, and even participate in sports, without any interference of spectacles or contact lenses. As you sleep the contact lens re-shapes the cornea gently—changes build up nightly and may require up to 1-2 weeks to fully restore vision.
Another benefit of Ortho-K has been its potential in slowing the progression of myopia (short-sightedness) in younger patients. Ortho-K is not permanent, and the lens can be updated if there is change in your prescription. To find out if your eyes are suitable for orthokeratology, make an appointment with one of our optometrists.
